Story Summary

Bulk and Skull are running and recording downtown Angel Grove, where we see Lady Grumptruck battling the Red Dragon Thunderzord. Destruction and chaos fill the first three pages, as we see through Skull’s videocamera, with the damage ongoing to the city, before cutting away to present.

Bulk and Skull are going around Ernie’s asking about the Power Rangers for their Ranger Station newscast. They come to Trini, who mentions a competing team’s footage – Ranger Report. The two are flabbergasted and seek to beat the Ranger Report to the next battle and get the perfect shot that will make them big bucks.

Bulk picks up some equipment to take with them. As the two head onward to the fight mentioned above, with Lady Grumptruck, they come across the Ranger Report team led by Brady – who scoffs at the duo and hurries off to the battle — now filled with more ambition than before the two race off downtown.

They go through falling debris and ducking out local police to get on the scene. After getting mediocre shots, Skull remembers a warehouse with a great view that the two were at during a concert. They go on the rooftop and get fantastic footage – until Skull spots people in trouble below, and the two become true heroes and help free them with the equipment they packed. However, during the battle, the camera becomes destroyed, and Bulk ends up disappointed with no footage.

Later while at the Juice Bar, Ernie mentions to Bulk that he and Skull are heroes for saving those people and names a milkshake after him. Skull encounters one of the people rescued and become smitten with them. The two recount the event at the Juice bar and agree they did the right thing, building upon their already historic friendship.

Writing

Ryan Parrott gets Power Rangers – he also gets Bulk and Skull! What a lovely story that might not be what I was expecting – but so glad I got to read. With not a single panel of Rangers seen – we still get an equitable look at the famous duo hunting down footage of the Power Rangers. We’ve had small two-page epilogue/backend stories in the main comic line before – but this is a welcome addition.

Artwork

Bayliss and Angulo are a terrific art team. We get lovely battle pages and some shining profile shots of the characters. A welcome change of pace from the intense fight scenes and sinister villains standing around plotting the demise of the Rangers. Sometimes it’s nice to see two teenagers with an attitude trying their hardest to help with powers.

Final Thoughts

Some might love this issue – others might not – I’m in the former and hope to see another take at Bulk and Skull chasing the rangers down, even if it’s a small tie into a current saga. Bring it on!
